Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed his frustration about the outcome of the first Ashes test match during the post match press conference. The match was in Australia’s favor except for day 1 and England just constantly tried to get them out of trouble in each session rather than trying to win the test match.
England started their day 5 with just two wickets down but lost wickets in quick successions due to an excellent bowling effort by Hilfenhaus, Johnson and Hauritz. Except for Collingwood who not just batted but battled along with the lower order none of the other batsmen showed resurgence. Collingwood scored a brilliant 74. Ricky was mainly frustrated due to the delay batsmen created when there was just an hour of play left and Australia were pressing hard for just another wicket. During this period England’s twelfth man and their physio appeared on the field without the players calling for them. “Let them play however they want, but we have come here to just play the game in the right way”, Ponting said. But England captain Strauss defended his team-mates saying that Anderson spilled drinks over his gloves and as in the dressing room they didn’t exactly know whom they wanted; they sent both the physio and the twelfth man. The match was not only delayed many times by nature but also by tactical brains is what Ricky would have thought after the match.
Anyhow this has raised tensions between the two camps and this only helps to increase the competitiveness of the series.
